Being a Church of Christ also says a lot. It means we intend to be just Christ's church. Though there are thousands of Churches of Christ throughout the nation, we are locally owned and operated. We are just a gathering of Christians who want to do things Christ's way -- in our worship, lifestyle, and relationships. We believe passionately in Jesus. We believe that in Jesus God reveals himself. So when we picture God we picture him hugging, smiling, crying, laughing, sometimes hurting, and nearly always one way or another sharing his dreams of how life can be on his good planet Earth. Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, we believe in a God who loves us enough to become one of us and die for us. We can, consequently, trust this God, and gradually we learn to trust the life he has given us. This makes an immense difference. We are committed, in the spirit of Jesus to stick to basics, to keep things personal and simple. We define and theologize no more than we have to. We believe life is about trusting the God who comes to earth and bleeds for us and is resurrected, and identifying with that God in baptism and the Sunday Lord's Supper. We structure as little as possible. We have some elders to direct us, nothing very official, mind you,just some experienced Christians to give us some some oversight. And we have some deacons and ministry leaders, good-hearted folks who get the needed jobs done. But we structure as little as possible and keep our worship basic, warm, and personal. On Sunday mornings at eleven o'clock we sing and pray and study scripture and celebrate the Lord's Supper, but we keep it simple. Our church is a place where we can feel completely at home. A place where the mood is upbeat and cheerful; where we can take time out from trouble; a place of hand-shakes and smiles and twinkling eyes. A place where we can unwind and express ourselves freely, and leave rejuvenated and restored. Here we come in contact with people who give us insights we would never otherwise get, who help us keep our jobs and our families and our problems in healthy perspective. Even disagreements are hammered out in good humor (usually!), and we are taught to laugh at things that otherwise shame us -- our balding heads and paunchy middles -- by a group of folks who undeniably enjoy us. We leave here (most times!) with an enhanced sense of being alive and our spirits lifted. We're Bible-based; we take God's word to be reliable and authoritative and our Bible classes (Sunday mornings at ten and Wednesday evenings at seven) are really first-rate ... for all ages, including adult. But beyond all this, we don't easily fit categories. Please come and visit with us. You'll find a lot of life and vitality, and depth and emotion, and grace and humanity. |
